Itʻs been great to re-engage in international education to facilitate cross-cultural exchanges between American college students and the global community.
This is especially important for me as an indigenous Micronesian living in a trumpian America that has become more xenophobic. Despite the tumultuous history of violence against the indigenous peoples of the Americas, I still believe in the goodness of Americans.
I have high hopes that these years under trump will bring about a humility much needed for Americans. Within that national humility will be a connecting point for Americans to learn from the richness of culture, languages, traditions, art, and beauty found around the world. America may boast of having the strongest military and economy, but the world wonders how such a powerful nation can be so powerless in the face of a corrupt president.
The young people of this nation will be the answer to rebuilding Americaʻs reputation through cross-cultural connections that happen through study abroad experiences. I am humbled to be part of that movement as a Micronesian educator at San Jose State University.
